About TTS | Th-MSR : What is new,
clean, safe and low-cost power generation? As is well known, conventional nuclear reactors use uranium fuel, then the reactors i. produce plutonium which is material of atomic bomb, ii. massively produce dangerous high-level nuclear wastes, and they have solid nuclear fuel rods, that can result to iii. failures in control systems and coolant loss that may cause nuclear runaway and reproduce critical accidents such as those happened in Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. On the other hand, our power generation technology by Th-MSR also uses nuclear chemical fission reaction, however, It uses thorium which is another nuclear material. Thorium fluoride is dissolved in molten salt of lithium and beryllium fluoride (Flibe). Th-MSR uses liquid fuel. Consequently, i. It does not only not produce plutonium, but also it is best burner (incinerator). It is used only for peaceful purposes. There is no danger of nuclear proliferation, which is the biggest drawback of conventional nuclear power plants. ii. It produces only a little high-level and low-level nuclear wastes. Thus, energy production is very clean. Furthermore, this liquid fuel is chemically stable and no pressure, and does not need to fabricate fuel rods. Consequently, iii. Nuclear runaway accidents such as "core melt-down" or "re-criticality" will never occur in principle. By any chance, if fuel leaks, it will become solidified as stable glass. Thus, our technology is highly safe and secure. In addition, iv. from economic view point, world thorium resources are larger than uranium resources; the structure and operation / maintenance of the reactor are simple, and the running cost is cheaper; the reactor can be downsized easily; reprocessing of fuel is easy. Thus, our technology is much more economical than the present nuclear electric generations.
